More About Who Will Introduce You to
Climbing
My tree climbing did begin as a joke. When one of my sons who
explored the outdoors with me went to college, I was lost! We had kayaked and
backpacked together for several years and now he was 7 hours away in the Smokey
Mountains. As he learned how to rock climb, it seemed all I heard was, "Dad
you've got to come up here and try this out!" Unfortunately making a living did
not allow me enough time to drive and play that far away very often.
Someone
suggested
one day, as I lamented, that he heard people were climbing trees with ropes now
and maybe
I
could do that instead. He said he had seen it on the television a few weeks
earlier and maybe I could find it on the Internet. That's exactly where I headed
and upon discovering Dancing with Trees
began an email conversation with its owner Genevieve Summers until I could get a
chance to check it out.
When I took the first class, I still thought it was a way for
adults to climb like we had all done as a kid, but with safety ropes. I was
wrong! Genevieve worked with me to the point where she showed
me how to "limb surf" and I was hooked.
Since then I have taken other courses, learned other skills, and now have begun
the South Georgia Tree Climbing Association (SGATCA). The main purpose of SGATCA
is to form an association of tree climbers who can climb together, learn
together and introduce others to the world of trees. Whether it is
environmental, spiritual, a desire to get outdoors, or just for the fun of it,
tree climbing can change your life!
