"What draws people to tree climbing?"

A sense of adventure and a love of all things natural are the most common denominators among recreational tree climbers. Tree climbers love being aloft and sharing what they find. With advances in technique and equipment, large trees that were once considered too big to climb can now be scaled with ease and safety. In addition, tree climbing is a great activity for families.

"How hard is it?"

Just about everyone can climb trees using a rope and harness. Exceptional strength is not needed. Lighter people will have an easier time of it than those who are heavier. But again, once you've "learned the ropes" , basic tree climbing is a snap!

"Is tree climbing safe?"

Tree climbing is safer than riding a bike down the street. Climbing is performed while you are suspended from a rope. As long as the rope is looped over a sturdy branch, and the knots are tied correctly, it is impossible to fall. To date, in all the years of our existence (since 1983), no one who has ever climbed with TCI has gotten hurt.

"What if I'm afraid of heights?"

This common concern is easily remedied at tree climbing school. Simply stated, there is no pressure to climb any higher than a person is ready to go. However, climbers often find that, once having attained a certain height, they become acclimated to it, and their fears dissipate. Feeling comfortable and secure on a rope, as well as receiving encouragement from other climbers, often helps people move beyond their fear to surprise even themselves with the heights they achieve!

"Can I climb if I'm out of shape?"

You don't have to be in great shape to climb, but it helps! As with any sport, the best way to get into shape is to exercise. Tree climbing is a self-paced activity that is not only strengthening, but it's entertaining as well. The whole body is exercised without the boredom of many fitness programs.

"What kind of medical problems should I worry about?"

Those who have had previous back or other major injuries, or a heart condition, should consult with a physician before climbing. However, to this point, climbers with TCI have never experienced a medical problem during or as a result of climbing.

"When are you too old to climb?"

There are people over 90 who are still climbing. Much will depend on your mental outlook. If you feel you are too old, likely your body will follow your thoughts. Give it a try and see what happens.

"How much does equipment cost?"

The basic equipment needed to climb most trees can be purchased for under $400.00. Quality equipment will provide years of service if you care for it properly. Remember, though, that when you climb with us, all equipment is supplied.

"What can I discover in a tree?"

There are lots of different things to discover in a tree. For example, you'll see some of its inhabitants up close. You might be fascinated by the different colors and textures of the leaves and branches. Be observant! And then, please share with us what you've seen or experienced.
